“I think Jamie has been dreaming of getting married here on her parents’ property since she was about 8…” -Micah

If you saw the farm house and surrounding land, it’s not difficult to understand why Jamie and Micah chose to get married at Jamie’s childhood home in Seven Valleys, Pennsylvania.  Talk about a photographer’s dream location!  There were so many great places to shoot that I was almost paralyzed with indecision. This area looks nice…and that one looks nice…and that one…and that one…every square inch of this place was GORGEOUS!  A simply beautiful farm house and even more beautifully maintained gardens.

Jamie and Micah met while working for Teach for America when they were both assigned to teach at the same school.  Micah already had plans to leave for medical school and Jamie stayed on an additional year to teach before entering medical school herself.  Their relationship has spanned a decade while being separated in different states.  A long-distance relationship that has truly stood the test of time and the stresses of medical school and residencies and multiple moves.  It was only fitting that they had a heartfelt and uncomplicated day surrounded by their closest friends and family.

The wedding was simple and DIY.  Flowers were collected from the abundant gardens to make the bouquets and boutonnieres.  A short, personalized ceremony.  A super tasty BBQ dinner.  Lawn games.  Lots of crazy dancing.  And an end to the evening punctuated by an impressive fireworks display right in their own backyard.  What a day!

This is the third time that I have had the honor of photographing Dazie for her birthday.  She’s turning 5 this year!  Each time she becomes more and more comfortable with having her photo taken.  And it is so much fun seeing how she changes from year to year.  Thankfully Dazie and her Aunt were very flexible and were able to accommodate a last minute change in time so that we could squeeze in these photos before a thunderstorm rolled through.  Boy am I ever glad they were able to make it work because the incoming storm clouds contributed to some awesome photos at the end of the session!

I’m sure that you’ll be able to tell from the photos that Dazie is one fun-loving, energetic kid and I always have fun photographing her.  She also learned a new vocabulary word this time around: frolic.  Something that she does very well.

Dazie had just performed at her dance recital the night before and per her request we took some photos of her in her costume. I did my fair share of ballet, jazz, and tap when I was a kid(my super sweet rhythm on the dance floor had to come from somewhere), and I can say with some confidence that the outfits have not changed much in 20+ years.  There are a number of some semi-embarrassing photos of me and my older sister in our super sweet costumes.  Dazie performed her dance(s) for me numerous times throughout the session and we were able to get some pretty cool shots amongst the wild daisies and fields on the farm before the storm hit.

This is my third time photographing this family and it is truly an honor.  It also means I am probably doing my job right!  Not too long ago we were all together taking family photos for Patrick’s 1st birthday and they told me to be expecting another call in the Spring because Patrick was being promoted to big brother!  Woohoo!

It came as no real surprise that ‘JJ’ is beyond adorable just like his brother.  Patrick is a pretty rambunctious kid so it proved to be pretty difficult to convince him to sit still long enough for me to take some photos of him with his newborn baby brother.  It required quite a bit of creativity on my part(for safety reasons), bribery, and help from three other adults to rattle off the few shots I needed.  You probably would not even be able to tell from the photos that the struggle is real.  I am here to tell you that photographing newborn babies and toddler siblings is one of the hardest things to do!  I have not mastered it yet, but I sure am trying!

I was also really impressed by the woodland theme Korie was using to decorate one of the kids’ rooms and decided to borrow the play teepee for the session.  Generally speaking, I am not a huge fan of props, but this teepee was the exception to the rule.  I kind of want one for myself to make an adult fort.  Way more substantial than the blanket/chair variety that I made when I was a kid!

“I caught my reflection in a spoon while I was eating my cereal, and I remember thinking: wow, you’re ridiculously good looking, maybe you could do that for a career.”

What can I say I have a very beautiful friend.  So what do you do when you have some places you want to shoot but have no one to photograph?  You call on said beautiful friend for assistance.  I know what you’re going to say when you look through the photos–‘oh my god, is she maybe secretly a super model?!’

Dissolving into uncontrollable laughter made up approximately 90% of the time we were shooting photos. He Ha Ha! Muah haha!  For most people I think the natural reaction to my ridiculous verbal direction or complete lack thereof is laughter.  Even I cannot believe some of the weird one-liners that come out of my mouth.  I cannot, however, take credit for the quote above since that is definitely pulled directly from Zoolander.  A most appropriate reference for the levels of silliness that ensued.

At one point there were two women walking at the park where we were taking photos and one remarked: “Oh my gosh, are you having your senior photos taken?!”
::commence boisterous laughter::
Making Alison and me feel pret-ty good about the aging process. We are just a BIT older than high school seniors.

I give you the Super Senior portraits:
